Your words today, O loving God through St. Paul are so refreshing, so lovely to read and hear, very reassuring especially for those of us losing hope in life, those so tired and exhausted, those about to give up; let us sing joyfully to You, O Lord, and serve You gladness!
For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works God has prepared in advance, that we should live in them (Ephesians 2:10).
Everything that we have become, every good and beautiful thing we do is simply because of You, O God, at work in us, through us; what a great honor, O God You made us so good and beautiful, You brought us here, You sent us for a mission; let us be open in order to give our unconditional "YES" to Jesus Christ in faith daily so that we may do continue your work in keeping this a better and more humane world; let us give our unconditional "YES" to Jesus daily so we may experience your guidance and help in our undertakings to reflect You, dear God, so that it is You who is always found and recognized in everything we do that is true, good, and beautiful; let us not be preoccupied with so much material wealth and fame that fills us with greed unable to satisfy the deepest longings of our hearts found only in You. The Lord Is My Chef Sunday Recipe for the Soul by Fr. Nicanor F. Lalog II Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Cycle B, 15 September 2024 Isaiah 50:5-9 <*{{{{>< James 2:14-18 ><}}}}*> Mark 8:27-35
There is something very striking with the similarities and differences in our gospel last Sunday and today that greatly reveal to us the person of Jesus Christ whom we all imitate and follow as His disciples.
In Decapolis last Sunday, Jesus separated a deaf man – “took him off by himself away from the crowd” – to heal him by putting his fingers into the man’s ears, then spitted and touched his tongue as he groaned “Ephphatha” – be opened – and the man was healed as “he spoke plainly”.
Further up north of Decapolis which is the chief pagan city of Caesarea Philippi, the Apostle Peter took Jesus away from the crowd after the Lord spoke openly of His coming Passion, Death, and Resurrection.
But unlike the deaf mute healed when separated from the rest, Jesus rebuked Peter as He returned to the crowd as He continued to speak openly of His coming Passion, Death, and Resurrection.
He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days. He spoke this openly. Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. At this he turned around and, looking at his disciples, rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do” (Mark 8:31-33).

I love the contrast of these two events Mark tells us so succinctly without missing details that speak so well of God’s ways and man’s ways, of what is to think and act like Jesus and how the devil tricks us into its devious and insidious ploys.
See also how last Sunday the healed deaf-mute “spoke plainly” in Christ while today we are invited by Mark to “openly speak” like Jesus of life’s sufferings and death.
When God separates us from the rest of the people and our usual routines like what happened at Decapolis last Sunday, it is because He wants us to experience Him more closely, for us to be healed, and for us to touch base with Him anew who is the very root of our being. Like that nameless deaf man, we need to separate once in a while from the world for us to be healed of our many deafness so that we may listen more intently to God’s voice and words right in our hearts, in the scriptures, and in the cries of the poor and suffering among us.
Actually, Jesus was continuing in Caesarea Philippi His method last Sunday of “separating” when He first asked the Twelve “Who do people say that I am?” that prompted them to tell Him the many misconceptions about His identity. In a similar way with the deaf at Decapolis, Jesus took off the Twelve in Caesarea Philippi when He asked them the more specific question “But who do you say that I am?” and Peter rightly answered Him, “You are the Christ.”
Matthew has a similar story probably with some additions from other sources that we find Jesus praising Peter for his answer, entrusting to him the church, and promising him with the key to heaven. The rebuke of Peter would happen later in their journey.
Mark had none of that considering his gospel was Matthew’s basis. We find in Mark’s brief account of Peter’s confession at Caesarea Philippi Perhaps how often just as when we feel so close with God like Peter, it is the same moment when the devil comes to trick us to break away from God and follow our own ways, not His.

The event at Caesarea Philippi gives us clearest sign to identify Jesus as the Christ, that is when Jesus speaks openly of His coming Passion, Death, and Resurrection.
He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days. He spoke this openly (Mark 8:31-32).
Jesus never hides us from the realities of life as He speaks “openly” of His Pasch. From Caesarea Philippi, Jesus and the Twelve would head back south towards Jerusalem making a stop over on Mount Tabor for the Transfiguration where Christ’s glory was revealed to Peter, James and John.
It was during His Transfiguration that that Father and the Son made clear that Christ’s glory cannot be separated from the Cross. It was after Caesarea Philippi when Jesus announced thrice to the Twelve His coming Passion, Death, and Resurrection.
Notice too that qualifier “must” – that He “must suffer greatly”.
Just one word but so powerful, showing us the consistency of Jesus in speaking about His Pasch, the Cross, and later its relationship with discipleship, of the need for us to forget ourselves, take up our cross and follow Him.

It saddens me when some priests and people in the Church shy away from talking openly about life’s many sufferings. We recognize their good intentions of not forgetting the beautiful and brighter side of being a Christian but to look at the Cross negatively and all its other implications is totally unChristian.
We cannot disregard the pains and darkness that come in being a disciple of Jesus; the Cross is the life of a disciple because it is the center of Christ’s person and teachings as expressed in yesterday’s Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. All these “health and wealth” style of many preachers even in the Church are red flags of the devil’s ploy, of Peter separating Jesus from the Cross.
We act like Peter rebuking Jesus in Caesarea Philippi whenever we try to soften or hide, even cover the corruption and abuses going on in the society and families, the Church and our communities. That is clearly thinking in man’s ways not in God’s ways.
We cannot arrive at the truth and beauty of life disregarding the falsehoods and negativities around us. That was the problem with the people in mistaking Jesus as one of the prophets who were seen more as miracle workers who instantly healed them of their sickness.

And here lies the danger too to us that we will never be able to have a good answer to Christ’s question “But who do you say I am?” if we avoid the many passion and death of this life in Jesus.
To openly speak like Jesus and embrace the sufferings and death we must endure is our first expression of faith with works we heard in the second reading from James.
To openly speak like Jesus and embrace the sufferings and death we must endure is the fulfillment of the first reading’s Song of the Suffering Servant who is Jesus Himself.
When we openly speak and embrace life’s daily sufferings and deaths like Jesus is to trust completely in God like Him. Let us speak openly of the Cross, of love and mercy, of God like Jesus Christ! Let us pray:
Lord Jesus Christ, let me continue to follow you closely by separating from the rest often to hear you more, to love you more, to trust you more; let me know you more clearly so that I may love you more dearly and follow you more closely speaking plainly, speaking openly without sugarcoating your call, your Cross. Amen.

And people brought to Jesus a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him off by himself away from the crowd. He put his finger into the man’s ears and, spitting, touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him, “Ephphatha!” – that is, “Be opened!” – And immediately the man’s ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly (Mark 7:31-35).
Come, Lord Jesus, take me away from the routines and ordinariness of this life that has become my comfort zone; touch me again and speak to me that word "Ephphatha" so I may be opened to speak plainly again: let me speak plainly of love not with eloquent words but with sincere gestures of care and kindness for the other person; let me speak plainly of love not with technicalities of the laws and rituals but with mercy and compassion for a sinner and those who have gone wayward; let me speak plainly of love, dear Jesus, like you, not with letters and punctuations but full of tenderness for the weak and the sick; let me speak plainly by being open, giving all that I have not only whatever is in excess; let me speak plainly not with advocacies so passionate but simply doing what is right and good to keep this world clean and just; let me speak plainly, O Lord, with a ready smile to anyone, wide arms to hug and welcome family and friends, warmth and joy to inspire those lost and about to give up; let me speak plainly, Jesus, like you that in the end of this life the heavens may open as I pray, "into your hands I commend my spirit." Amen.

Today, dear God, I share in the joy of the people at the time of your Son Jesus when he healed a deaf in the district of Decapolis:
They were exceedingly astonished and they said, “He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”
Mark 7:37
Yes, loving Father, you have done all things well, so very well in fact, in Jesus Christ our Lord that I am also exceedingly astonished with your love and mercy.
When I look back to my life even amid all the storms and failures I have had, you still have done all things well in my favor; when I remember those sufferings I almost gave up and quit, you have done all things in my favor, making me stronger and better, even wiser today; when I look back to the many losses and defeats I have had, you still have done all things well in my favor, teaching me the values of perseverance, patience, and fulfillment, as well as the differences between happiness and joy, success and fruitfulness.
Dear Father, keep us open to your grace and wisdom and plans for us; most of all, keep us open to Jesus Christ who comes to us always even in paths we least expect to find him, in backward routes no one takes, and in foreign territories we refuse to venture into. Let our daily prayer include his command, "Ephphatha"! Amen.

God our loving Father, we praise and thank you on this Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception for continuing to do your wondrous works for our salvation, for our healing for our good.
You are so kind to us, Father, despite our sins and turning away from you, you search us, you call us, most of all, you still bless us with your merciful presence in Jesus Christ.
Teach us to be like Mary, our Blessed Virgin Mother, to be open always to your coming, to your calls, to your grace; teach us most of all to be selfless, to be kind too to your boundless kindness, O God; many times, we are like Adam and Eve with so many alibis, always hiding from you, evading you, not trusting you.
Teach us, O Lord, to imitate Mary to not seek so many reasons and explanations, to simply trust in you and say YES to your will and plans always; may we always keep in mind like Mary, your sublime kindness O God of always inviting us, asking us, never imposing on us to freely choose him and make Christmas possible every day. Amen.

Until now, many Catholics still get wrong the meaning of the Immaculate Conception of Mary we celebrate today. Very often, they thought it is the Immaculate Conception of Jesus by Mary his Mother.
Wrong. The Immaculate Conception refers to St. Anne’s pregnancy of the Blessed Virgin Mary. According to Ineffabilis Deus issued by Pope Pius IX on December 8, 1854 establishing the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary that had long been held as a tradition in the Church, the Blessed Virgin “in the first instance of her conception, by a singular privilege and grace granted by God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race, was preserved exempt from all stain of sin.”
Unlike everyone of us stained by original sin, Mary in all eternity was spared from any sin by God himself so that she would be pure and clean to conceive and bear, and eventually gave birth to the Son of God, our Lord Jesus Christ.
Count the months from December 8 to September 8 the birthday of Mary, you get exactly nine months and perhaps that gives you a clearer picture now of what the Immaculate Conception refers to. But, what should rely merit more of our attention in this great celebration happening also in this merry month of December is the great reality of how God works in wondrous and mysterious ways among us, asking for our cooperation for its realization.
Are we willing to be like the Blessed Virgin Mary to be God’s partner in bringing salvation in this world?

Maybe one of the sources of confusion on the Immaculate Conception is the fact that it is not found in the Scriptures. See how our gospel today actually speaks of the annunciation of the birth of Jesus Christ; however, from this we can also glean Mary’s Immaculate Conception by being referred twice by Luke as a virgin.
The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.”

It is very interesting to keep in mind that the two dogmas about the Blessed Virgin Mary – the Immaculate Conception and the Assumption issued 100 years later – speak of our beginning and end. In the Immaculate Conception, we are reminded of our original status of being pure and sinless until the fall of Adam and Eve we have heard in the first reading. The Assumption on the other hand, tells us of our destiny in the future, of “the resurrection of body and life everlasting”.
Originally before our fall, we have always been clean and sinless. Like Mary in her Immaculate Conception. See how Luke was very specific in using twice the term virgin or parthenos in Greek because at that time like ours, not all maidens were virgin.

Virginity here does not only speak of the physical sense but also of the deeper spiritual meaning of being clean and open to receive, to accept God in our hearts, in our being. A virgin is someone who is pure and clean of heart like in the Beatitude taught by Jesus Christ at his sermon on the mount, “Blessed are the clean of heart for they shall see God” (Mt. 5:8).
How sad that in our highly competitive and materialistic world, the value of virginity is laughed at or even frowned upon like a handicap or a shortcoming, clear sign of how far we have veered away from God and his teachings. Worst, we have limited our views of virginity and purity to the physical level, forgetting to shift to higher level of understanding and appreciation.
To have a clean or pure heart is to be like Jesus Christ, wholly united and obedient to the Father. Jesus himself proclaimed that everything he had said and done were not his but of the Father. That is the purity of the heart of Jesus, deeply one in the Father that he was the first to see God.
And that is also the kind of person our Blessed Mother is, the model disciple of Jesus her Son for having a heart one with his that on her Assumption she truly became the first to see God too!
Recall also how at the wedding feast in Cana, Mary showed us the example of having a clean heart, of “doing whatever he tells you” which she later proved at the foot of the Cross by standing there with Jesus until his death. That is why according to the meditation of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the Risen Lord first appeared to his Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary because she was the first to believe in him totally.

On this Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, we are reminded that like her, we are all filled with grace from God in Jesus Christ. St. Paul beautifully expressed this in our second reading today.
Brothers and sisters: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens, as he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and without blemish before him.
Ephesians 1:3-4
The grace of this Solemnity is the reality how God continues to work his wondrous deeds in this world among us, in us through his Son Jesus Christ. But, all his plans can only be realized when we his children are willing to cooperate with him, to be open like Mary to receive Jesus Christ.
Again, we do not have to take everything in the literal sense. God announces to us his coming every day not through the angel Gabriel but through those people around us, especially those we take for granted like the weak and marginalized, the children we do not take seriously because they are kids or the senior people especially the old and sick we find as burdensome.
Like Mary, we are all full of grace, the Lord is with us. Can we show him in our loving service to one another?
Let us pause on this day to go back to our roots in God, our origin and end in order to have that empty space for his Son Jesus Christ to come and work in us in healing us and our very sick world. Amen.

today, O God our Father,
citing to us your many attributes
as Wisdom, "a spirit intelligent,
holy, unique, manifold, subtle"
and some 30 others that beautifully
present to us your transcendence
and immanence not only around us
but most of all within us!
What I like most, O God,
are these:
For Wisdom is mobile beyond all motion, and she penetrates and pervades all things by reason of her purity. And she, who is one, can do all things, and renews everything while herself perduring; and passing into holy souls from age to age, she produces friends of God and prophets.

Dearest Father in heaven:
Is there really being at the
wrong place at a wrong time?
It has been 22 years since 9/11
when so many lives were lost,
many families and relationships
were broken by those terrorist attacks;
recently, over 2000 people perished
in a massive earthquake in Morocco;
everywhere, bad things happen to
many people because they were
at the wrong place at the wrong time,
Father?
I know, dear God,
life is not that simple
or simplistic, of being at the
wrong place at the wrong time;
if you are everywhere, Father,
how could there be
a wrong place and
a wrong time?
Brothers and sisters: I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of his Body, which is the Church…

But as I prayed with St. Paul,
I realize something more deep,
more profound, even mysterious,
than our common excuse of
being at the wrong place at the
wrong time: every here and now
is always a right place and
right time in you, O God our
loving Father!
St. Paul was at the right place and
right time on that day on his way
to Damascus to persecute
the Christians to meet Jesus Christ;
all throughout his life, as he
completely surrendered to Jesus,
St. Paul found everything falling
into its right place in you, O God.
Many times,
people and nature
may seem to put us
at the wrong place
and the wrong time,
but you always ensure, O God,
in Christ Jesus that everything
will work out in our favor
like that man with a withered hand
planted by the scribes and
Pharisees at the synagogue
on a sabbath to see if Jesus
would heal him.
But he realized their intentions and said to the man with the withered hand, “Come up and stand before us.” And he rose and stood there. Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful to do good on the sabbath rather than do evil, to save life rather than destroy it?” Looking around at them all, he then said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so and his hand was restored.

There are many ways of looking
at every situation in life,
either as a blessing
or a curse or a bad luck
as some would usually say;
but with you, dear Jesus
who had come to bring God
closest to us,
every time,
every place
is always the right one,
a blessed one.
Open our hearts
to your loving presence,
Father, in Jesus Christ
who suffered and died
to rise again for us
to experience life
amid death,
joy amid sufferings,
and light in darkness.

You said it perfectly well,
Lord Jesus Christ,
our very own parable
of life
and of time:
"because they look but do not see
and hear but do not listen or understand"
(Matthew 13:13).
Why, O Lord,
despite the modern communications
meant to bring us closer,
the more we have actually
grown apart from each other?
Why, O Lord,
despite the great speed
of our communications,
the more we cannot be reached,
or slower we have become
in reaching out,
in coming to everyone
especially those in need?
Why, O Lord,
despite the clarity of signals
of communications, the more things
and persons are blurred,
including our relationships?
When you spoke
to your people in the Old Testament
with peals of thunder and lightning,
they were scared to death;
when your Son Jesus came
and lived among them,
speaking their language,
they found him too ordinary,
even a nobody;
today, you continue to speak
to us in nature and in person,
through our many experiences,
through the people we meet,
through the sacraments,
through many means and occasions
even right in our hearts
but still,
we neither see,
nor hear nor listen.
What a parable we live!
Open our hearts, O Lord,
so we may believe,
hear and listen,
allow ourselves to be surprised
and amazed by you with the
most simple things to make us
realize you are
true and so real
right within us.

God our Father,
today your words teach us
what is to be truly opened,
when openness leads us to sin
and when the same openness leads
us to grace.
But the serpent said to the woman: “You certainly will not die! No, God knows well that the moment you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods who know what is good and what is evil.” …Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made loincloths for themselves.

Keep us open to you always, Lord;
let us not dare open our eyes to things
we cannot completely see nor
comprehend;
keep us at home with the truth that
there are many things that seem only to be
apparently good and better not seen at all
because our eyes cannot completely see
and embrace the whole reality;

would only close us,
shut us out from you.

to your loving presence
and to your very person
so we may experience too
your healing comfort

to open up to you,
like St. Scholastica
to bare our souls
and give our lives to you
in Christ Jesus who had come
to open for us anew the heavens
and finally be one in you
and with you.
