Tawag pansin at higit sa lahat ay nakatutuwa ang pahayag ng Santo Papa Leo XIV kamakailan mula sa Roma na mag-ingat aniya ang lahat sa maling habag at awa.

Nagtipon sa Roma noong isang linggo ang mga bumubuo sa court of appeals ng Simbahan kung tawagin ay Roman Rota na siyang humahawak sa mga kaso ng marriage annulment. Heto yung pambungad na bahagi ng balita mula sa Vatican:

Noon pa mang mahalal na Santo Papa si Leo XIV, marami na siyang pahayag na nakakatawag pansin hindi sapagkat kakaiba o nakakagulat katulad ng sinundan niyang si Papa Francisco.

Pagmasdan palaging malinaw at ayon sa turo ng Simbahan at kanyang mga tradisyon ang mga pahayag ni Papa Leon. Walang malabo na nagbibigay daan sa maling pagkaunawa o interpretasyon. At sa lahat ng kanyang binitiwang salita, ito ang pinaka-nagustuhan ko dahil totoong-totoo. Hindi lamang sa larangan ng pagsusuri sa mga kaso ng annulment ng mga kasal kungdi sa ating buhay mismo.

Bagaman mahalaga ang maging mahabagin na siyang pinaka tuon ng pansin ni Pope Francis noon, niliwanag ngayon ni Papa Leon na hindi maaring puro na lang awa at habag.

Tunay naman na maraming pagkakataon lumalabis ating habag at awa habang nakakalimutan ang katotohanan. Lalo na sa ating mga Pinoy na puro na lang awa at bihira gumana ang batas kaya naman palala ng palala ang ating sitwasyon na nawawala na ang kaayusan dahil bihirang bigyang pagkakataon ang gawi ng katarungan.

Sa tuwing nasasantabi ang katotohanan at nangingibabaw ang pagkaawa, ito ay nagiging maling uri ng habag dahil hindi maaring pairalin ang awa kung walang katotohanan. Ipinaliwanag ni Papa Leon noong isang linggo na palagi sa lahat ng pagkakataon na hanapin at tingnan muna ang katotohanan sa mga bagay-bagay na kinokonsidera ukol sa mga kaso ng sa kasal. Idiniin ng Santo Papa na dapat maunang hanapin at panindigan ang katotohanan dahil ito mismo si Jesu_Kristo na nagsabing “Ako ang daan at ang katotohanan at ang buhay” (Jn. 14:6).

Gayon din sa buhay. Ang maging maawain sa gitna ng kawalan ng katotohanan lalo na namamayani ang kasinungalingan ay maling-mali sapagkat sa tuwing nauuna ang awa at habag kesa katotohanan, nasasantabi rin ang katarungan kung saan mayroong tiyak na napagkakaitan nito. Hindi nagiging patas ang kalagayan kung puro awa at walang katotohanan.

Sa tuwing nauuna ang pagkamaawain sa gitna ng kawalan ng katotohanan, lalo tayo nagiging walang awa o merciless sa dapat kaawaan habang hinahayaan natin ang pag-iral ng kasinungalingan. Balang araw, lulubha at lalala ang kamaliang ito kaya higit na marami ang mahihirapan.

Hindi maaring pairalin ang habag at awa kung mayroong mali at kasamaan. Iyan problema sa ating bansa: lahat na lang kinaawan at pinatawad maski walang pagsisisi ni pag-amin ng kasalanan kaya wala ring napaparusahan ni nakukulong! Magtataka pa ba tayo wala tayong kaayusan at higit sa lahat, wala tayong patunguhan?

Kinabukasan ng halalan noong 2019 habang almusal, nagsabi ng sorry sa akin ang aming kasambahay sa kumbento. Bakita ika ko? Kasi daw binoto niya pa rin si Bong Revilla bilang Senador sa kabila ng pagsasabi ko na huwag iboto; paliwanag niya sa akin ay “nakakaawa naman kung walang boboto kay Bong”.

Hindi ko malaman noon kung ako ay tatawa o magagalit. Sabi ko na lang sa kanya, puro ka awa kay Bong e hayun siya pa isa sa mga maraming nakuhang boto bilang senador, dinaig mga karapat-dapat! Ano nangyari mula noon hanggang ngayon? Sangkot diumano sa mga kaso ng pandarambong si Bong Revilla, hindi ba? Kasi nga binalewala ng mga botante ang katotohanan ng dati niyang kaso ng corruption kay Napoles at higit sa lahat ang kawalan niya ng kakayahan bilang mambabatas.

Ganyan nangyayari sa buhay saan man kapag isinasantabi ang katotohanan at pinaiiral palagi ang awa at habag. Kay rami nating mga mag-aaral na nakakatapos at guma-graduate na walang alam dahil kinaawaan lang ng guro. Tama nga tawag sa kanila, “pasang-awa” pero sino ang kawawa kapag bumabagsak ang tulay o lumalala ang pasyente?

Walang natututo ng ano mang aral sa paaralan o sa buhay man nang dahil lang sa awa. Hindi titino ang bansa kapag lalaktawan ang mga batas dahil kaaawaan palagi ang mga lumalabag.

Reklamo tayo ng reklamo na namimili ang batas o selective kung saan mayroong mga pinapaboran at hindi kasi naman mas pinipili natin palagi ang awa kesa katotohanan na mayroong mali o kulang.

Kailan natin haharapin ang katotohanan? Kaya nga sinabi ni Jesus na “ang mapagkakatiwalaan sa munting bagayay pagkakatiwalaan ng higit na malalaking bagay, ang hindi tapat sa munting bagay at hindi rin mapagkakatiwalaan sa malalaking bagay” (Lk.16:10-14).

Hindi tayo nagiging maawain o merciful bagkus ay nagiging walang awa o merciless nga tayo kapag maling awa ang umiiral sa atin dahil malayo tayo sa katotohanan. Katotohanang muna bago habag at awa. Veritas et Misericordia gaya ng motto ng aming pamantasan. Naawa ni Jesus sa mga makasalanan tulad ng babaeng nahuli sa pakikiapid, kay Maria Magdalena at kay Dimas dahil umamin silang lahat sa katotohanan na sila nga ay nagkasala. Gagana lamang ang habag at awa ng Diyos kapag mayroong pag-amin at pagtanggap sa katotohanan. Huwad ang ano mang awa kapag walang katotohanan dahil tiyak wala ring katarungan na umiiral doon.

Walang bansa ang umunlad dahil lang sa awa, lalo na sa maling awa kungdi sa pagsasaliksik at paninindigan ng katotohanan.

Higit sa lahat ay nakakabuhay ng pag-asa ang pahayag ni Pope Leo para sa Simbahang Katolika lalo na dito sa Pilipinas. Nakakahiya at nakakalungkot kaming mga pari na gayon na lang kung makapula sa mga politiko at upisyal ng gobyerno sangkot sa anomalya ngunit kapag kapwa pari ang may katiwalian at alingasngas… ano laging hiling namin maging ng mga tao?

Patawarin. Kaawaan. Hayaan na lang.

Bakit ganoon?

Bukod na ang pari ay dapat larawan ng kabutihan, kami rin siyang dapat tagapagtanghal at tagapagtanggol ng katotohanan. Hindi lang ng awa. Iyong tama na awa gaya ng sinasaad ni Papa Leon. At ng Diyos.

Ang masakit ay, palaging pakiusap at sangkalan ng mga pari ay awa kahit na mali ang ginawa o ginagawa. Kaya malaking aral sa Simbahan ang yumanig na sex scandal noon. At diyan natin makikita walang katanda-tanda ang ilang pari at obispo dito sa Pilipinas: kapag pinag-usapan kaso ng mga paring sangkot sa sex at money scams, kaagad-agad ang hiling nila ay “awa”.

Kawalan ng katarungan at isang kasinungalingan kapag mga kaparian sa pamumuno at pangunguna ng obispo ay puro awa habang winawalang bahala ang katotohanan. Nakakatawa at nakaka-inis maringgan mga pari at obispo nasisiyahan sa mga kuwentong Maritess pero kapag ang paksa ay katiwalian ng isang pari, ni hindi man lamang alamin, suriin kung totoo o hindi upang maituwid. Kaya sa kahuli-hulihan, maraming pari at obispo lumalakad may ipot sa ulo dahil kitang-kita ng iba ang kamalian at kasinungaligan na sila ang ni ayaw tumingin ni umamin.

Sa mga nangyayari ngayon sa bansa, ito rin ang hamon sa amin sa Simbahan: magpakatotoo, huwag pairalin maling awa o false mercy wika ni Pope Leo upang si Kristo ang tunay na maghari sa ating buhay upang makamit tunay na pag-unlad sa lahat ng larangan ng buhay. Ano ang iyong palagay sa sinabi ni Papa Leon ukol sa maling awa? Mag-ingat at baka mayroon ka rin niyon. Amen.

PANALANGIN KAY SAN JUAN APOSTOL AT EBANGHELISTA KAUGNAY NG MGA BAGONG SANTO NG SIMBAHAN: PAPA JUAN PABLO II at PAPA JUAN XXIII

Mula Hunyo 2011 hanggang Pebrero 2021 ay naglingkod ako bilang kura paroko ng Parokya ni San Juan Apostol at Ebanghelista sa Bagbaguin, Santa Maria, Bulacan bago nalipat bilang chaplain ng Our Lady of Fatima University (OLFU) at Fatima University Medical Center (FUMC) dito sa Valenzuela City.

Iyon ang una at marahil huli ko nang assignment na parokya sa loob ng dalawamput-pitong taon ko sa pagkapari. Masaya ako at fulfilled sa lahat ng aking mga assignment ngunit mayroong kakaibang karanasan sa parokya di tulad sa mga paaralan na dalawang ulit ko nang napupuntahan.

Ibig ko noong mahalin at pahalagahan ng mga taga-Bagbaguin ang kanilang Patron na sabi ko nga ang siyang minamahal na alagad din ng Panginoon. Noon namin sinimulan araw ng debosyon kay San Juan Apostol tuwing araw ng Martes.

Noong 27 Abril 2014 na isang Divine Mercy Sunday, ginanap sa Roma ang canonization ng dalawang makabagong Santo Papa na kapwa kapangalan ng aming Patron, sina San Juan XXIII at San Juan Pablo II. Kaya minabuti ko na sumulat noon ng panalangin aming dinarasal tuwing araw ng Sabado upang maranasan ng mga mananampalataya ang bisa ng pananalangin ng tatlong San Juan para sa kanila: San Juan Apostol na kapistahan ay tuwing Disyembre 27, San Juan XXIII tuwing Oktubre 11 at San Juan Pablo II tuwing Oktubre 22.

Para sa mga ibig magkaroon ng debosyon sa tatlong San Juan ng Simbahan, narito aking panalangin:

Minamahal naming Patron na Banal, 
Juan Apostol at Ebanghelista po ang inyong ngalan!
Ngayo'y aming ipinagdiriwang sa buong Simbahan 
dalawang bagong Banal: Kapwa sila pastol ng kawan, 
nang manungkula'y pangalan mo ang hiniram.

San Juan Beinte-tres nang sa kanyang katandaan tulad mo,
Sinikap maging makabuluhan at buhay na palatandaan ng Diyos

God our loving Father,
thank you for the unique grace
of having lived during the
pontificate of St. John Paul II:
what a tremendous blessing 
from you to grace us with St. John Paul II
as our Pope who had overcome 
so many difficulties and struggles 
in life personally by being orphaned 
at a very young age from his mother 
then from his father and later 
from his only beloved brother, 
not to mention his coming from Poland, 
a country exploited by foreign powers 
and subjected to communism 
for the longest time.

In his entire life, Lord, 
you have always shown 
your loving presence in him 
and destined him to be your sign 
in this most difficult period in history 
when men and women gravely challenged you 
with so many evil and sins, 
including by some priests you have called to serve.

St. John Paul II
showed us in his life
consistent with his teachings
and writings the need for us to be
your slave of righteousness,
a slave of love and goodness,
a slave of Christ:

Do you not know that if you present yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of one you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God that, although you were once slaves of sin, you have become obedient from the heart to the pattern of teaching to which you were entrusted. Freed from sin, you have becomes slaves of righteousness (Romans 6:16-18).

Let us grow in obedience
to you, Jesus like your great Pope,
St. John Paul II who lived and 
served us with great examples of
his life waging war against 
the many evils of our time, 
standing for what is true and good,
your voice in this wilderness, 
telling us to "be not afraid" to love 
and serve the weakest among us
while awaiting your return like 
in your parable today.

Easter in Death

Easter is God surprising us with every death of a loved one as a testament of the Resurrection of his Son and our Lord Jesus Christ. What a big surprise this afternoon right after Easter, we all heard the news of the death of the Holy Father, Pope Francis.

Of course, there was the sadness and surprise of the news but deep within us as the news sank deeper is the joy of his being with God in eternity.

The first Pope from South America, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires, Argentina broke many traditions in the papacy first when he picked a name never been used by his predecessors, choosing instead a non-priest saint known for simplicity and humility, St. Francis of Assisi.

When he was presented to the city and the world (Urbi et Orbi) as the new Pontiff, instead of blessing those present at St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis announced first his request for prayers from the people before blessing them eventually as every new Pope would do.

Yesterday at his Easter Message to the people, Pope Francis spoke about death and eternal life, of how “the Risen Christ fills us with the certainty that we too are called to share in the life that knows no end, when the clash of arms and the rumble of death will be heard no more.” In life, Pope Francis faced head on the many problems of secularism and materialism in the world, becoming the voice of the poor and the marginalized with mercy of God as one of his major themes in his papacy.

Personally, his most defining moment as a Pope happened during his special Message at the height of the pandemic in 2020 when despite his age and frailty, he walked through the empty St. Peter Square with courage and determination, faith and hope to lead us in prayers and love in crossing the turbulent sea of life amid the storm of COVID virus.

In life, Pope Francis proved to us like his two predecessor St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI the truth and reality of God amid a world that has continued to refuse his very existence and relevance.

In dying, Pope Francis showed us too like his two predecessors that death is in fact a blessing because it is a sharing in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ especially when you die in Easter.

St. John Paul II died on April 02, 2005 in the Easter Octave, the eve of Divine Mercy Sunday while Pope Benedict XVI died on the eve of the new year in December 31, 2022 during the octave of Christmas.

Octave refers to the eight day celebration of the major Solemnities of Easter and Christmas to remind us of its depth and meaning that cannot be grasp in just one day of the actual feast. Moreover, the eighth day or octave is actually signifies eternity: from Sunday to Saturday of every week we have seven days; octave as the eighth day is heaven.

How lovely that on Easter Sunday at the balcony of the Vatican, Pope Francis gave his blessings to the urbi et orbi anew to be his final one – consciously or unconsciously as he stepped onto the threshold of eternal life. It was his final homily too that was most eloquent, blessing us all in the “Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

Thank you for blessing us, Pope Francis – Lolo Kiko – in life and in death. Amen.

Pope Francis’ rule of 8

Pope Francis again called on us priests to keep our homilies short during his General Audience at the Vatican yesterday, December 04, 2024. He said, “Preachers must preach an idea, a feeling, and a call to action. Beyond eight minutes the preaching starts to fade, it is not understood.”

According to the Catholic News Agency, the pilgrims applauded the Pope’s remarks that is again sweeping the social media circles of many Catholics especially in the Philippines. It is trending, in fact, because our people are so fed up with our long, boring homilies.

However, I find the Pope’s reminder lacking in substance, in what is most essential.

This is the second time this year since June and the third since 2018 that Pope Francis urged priests to be brief with their homilies. It is actually an echo to the recommendations by Archbishop Nikola Eterovic’s 2010 book on the 2008 Synod on the Word of God that advised bishops to keep their homilies to eight minutes or shorter to avoid “improvisations” at the pulpit.

(Now you see, the problem actually is with the bishops who mostly give poor homilies but effective tranquilizers. In fact, Pope Francis’ homily last Holy Thursday was over 20 minutes, but, of course, he is the Supreme Pontiff…)

Instead of focusing on the duration of the homily, Pope Francis should have adopted St. Augustine’s stance: the priest must first and foremost pray to give a good homily. Duration and length of homily is secondary when the priest’s homily is the fruit of his prayers (and studies).

In the fourth book of his Doctrina Cristiana, St. Augustine said that “every homily is from God” when truly prayed upon by the priest and deacon. He admitted that not every priest is gifted in preparing good homilies that is why he encouraged priests to share homilies that others may imitate. St. Augustine categorically wrote that there is no problem in copying the homily of other priests; what is unacceptable (and sinful) is when the priest’s homily and life do not jibe, when the priest does not walk his talk.

That is why when people ask me what is the most difficult part of priesthood, I always say since my first year as a priest, it is the prayer life – not celibacy nor poverty. Both are hinged on the priest’s prayer life.

Prayer is always difficult because it is the work of the Holy Spirit, demanding our time and total self. When we pray, we strip ourselves naked before God, facing our true selves minus our many pretensions and masks as a person. And a priest.

Hence, whatever we preach is the fruit of our prayer which is very scary. When we priests deliver our homily, we subject ourselves to your scrutiny. And that’s how we are judged by the people: does this priest practice what he preaches?

I have been a priest for more than 26 years but I still get nervous and scared before every celebration of the Mass, specially in delivering the homily.

When the Alleluia is sung and we bow our heads before the altar to recite our silent prayer – “Lord, cleanse my heart and my lips that I may worthily proclaim the Gospel” – I always add the words of John the Baptist to Jesus at Jordan before His baptism, “Lord, let me decrease so that you will increase.”

We priests are the first to be affected by our preaching. Kami ang unang nasasaktan at tinatamaan sa katotohanang ipinahahayag namin. That is when true connection with people and the gospel happens which Pope Francis discussed lengthily in his 2013 Apostolic Exhortation “Evangelii Gaudium”, giving practical tips in preparing homilies in its third chapter, “Proclaiming the Gospel”. Always at the very core of every homily and of the priesthood in particular is prayer, our communion with Jesus Christ, our Eternal Priest.

When the priest lacks the passion in celebrating the Sacraments particularly Holy Eucharist and Confession, when he habitually skips giving a homily, and worst, when he avoids celebrating the Mass daily – he is no longer praying. That is 100% sure. Most likely, Father is in crisis, deep into a vice, or a relationship.

Therefore, instead of zeroing into the duration of the homily, the Holy Father must encourage – or demand – us priests and bishops to have a prayer life, to go back to Jesus in prayer as the late Pope Benedict XVI had insisted until shortly before his death in December 2022.

And this falls upon you, too, our dear lay people. Please stop inviting us priests too often to late night socials and coffee. Give us the space and time to be home before 9PM or better, to keep us in our rectory in the evening to study and pray for our celebration of the Holy Mass the following day. We may go out at night but not so often. It is not our way of life.

Let me end this with another worthy lesson from St. Augustine in his other book about teaching catechism called De Catechizandis Rudibus, “the catechist is the lesson himself/herself.” In the same manner, “the priest is the homily himself”, too! Pray for us your priests and help us remain holy and prayerful.

Life is where we stand not where we sit

How did John recognize Jesus
coming to him for baptism in

that John could boldly claim
Jesus is the lamb of God,
the one he had said as coming
though he did not know him
(cf. Jn.1:29-31).
What a beautiful scene of two
genuine souls
recognizing each other!
If we could just replicate it daily
in our lives too,
beginning in our home!

In our modern time that
is so very much like the time of Jesus
when people have turned away from you, God
including those who claim to be Christians
yet promoting abortion and same sex union
as well as priests and bishops
supposed to be the light of reason,
decency, and morality but are not,
we are so blessed with your humble servant,
Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.
His was a genuine soul,
a most genteel person so maligned
by many especially the Western press
 and some clergymen
for his fidelity to the Lord's teachings,
truly a John the Baptist who pointed us all
to go back to Jesus Christ especially
in the light of the sex scams that have rocked
the Church;
his writings are simply the best,
in itself like the gospel exposing your
truth in words so understandable;
most of all,
he lived in all simplicity and humility
that he was able to see
eternity.

Most dearest Jesus,
grant me the grace you gave
Pope Benedict XVI:
may I also say before my death
in all sincerity and truth,
"Lord, I love you".
Let these words be
impressed on my soul
and be my guide
in life.
Amen.

A prayer for Pope emeritus Benedict XVI, our modern Simeon

1 John 2:3-11 ><000'> + ><000'> + ><000'> Luke 2:22-35

God our loving Father,
on this Thursday in the Octave of Christmas,
I pray only for the well-being of our beloved
Pope emeritus Benedict XVI.
I love him and deeply respect him for
his holiness characterized by his wisdom
expressed so clearly in his many writings
in defending our faith and proclaiming
Jesus Christ our Lord;
all these he had expressed in all humility
and simplicity with a life full of love
and fervent hope in you and eternity.
He is our modern Simeon,
so misunderstood and even maligned by many
yet, you have been in deep conversations with him
that he had boldly took the great sacrifice of stepping down
from the papacy to await his final call.
Now that Pope Benedict XVI is seriously sick,
I pray like Simeon for him,
"Lord, now you let your servant Benedict XVI 
go in peace, your word has been fulfilled in him:
he has not only seen the salvation with his own eyes
but had enabled us all to see Jesus"; 
in his life and writings, Benedict XVI was clearly
in your light because all he lived and taught
is love for you, O God, and,
love for others and humanity.
Amen.
