It is still too early, Lord Jesus Christ but every moment is always a "happy hour" in you as you speak of new wine into fresh wineskins:
Likewise, no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the skins are wuined. Rather, new wine in poured into fresh wineskins” (Mark 2:22).
Teach me, Jesus to have a "new mind in Christ" (1 Cor. 2:16), to truly fast my mind and my heart by emptying myself of so many things like beliefs and suppositions that prevent me from welcoming you into myself; turn me into a fresh wineskin, Lord by discarding my old self that has become my comfort zone of complacency and mediocrity; teach me obedience, Jesus that I may truly appreciate and realize the true meaning of our many traditions like fasting and prayer that lead to glorifying you and union in you; forgive me on many occasions of acting and believing like King Saul of justifying disobedience, insisting on my own understanding and seeing of things.
Many times, indeed, we "burst" because we never have you in us, Jesus, for we are so filled with our old selves. Amen.

We praise and thank God today on this Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary that formally kicked off the process of the fulfillment of his promised salvation in Jesus born by the Virgin Mother.
According to our official Church teaching called dogma, Mary was conceived by her mother St. Anne without any stain of original sin through the merits of Jesus Christ our Savior. Mary has to be pure and clean because she would bear the Son of God who is perfect and spotless.
God chose Mary to be the Mother of Jesus not because of her having any special traits but purely out of God’s goodness “who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens” (Eph.1:3).
Hence, this feast reminds us too to imitate the Blessed Virgin in saying “yes” to God’s invitation to cooperate in his wonderful plans of bringing Jesus into this world so darkened by sin that has left us broken and fragmented from each other. Rejoice, therefore, because everyday, God sends us his angel to greet us with “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you” (Lk.1:26), inviting us into an intimacy with him like Mary.

Intimacy is more than being close with another; it is an expression of love that is willing to sacrifice, to suffer and get hurt for the sake of the beloved.
God was the first to express his intimacy with us not just by expressing his immense love for us in words by the prophets in the Old Testament but by sending us his Son Jesus Christ who became human like us in everything except sin. Actually, God does not need to become human like us to save us but he chose to be one of us because he loves us so much. As an expression of his intimacy and solidarity with us, Jesus suffered and died on the Cross while going through every pain and hurt we go through in life like grief and sadness in losing a friend, betrayal by a friend, abandonment by friends, no to mention being terrified, going hungry and thirsty. Jesus became like us so that we may become like God – intimately loving him through others.
Actually, God does not need us but he chose to love us, to be with us, to be intimate with us because he loves us so much. God remains God even without us. When we do not pray, when we do not go to Mass on Sundays, when we are bad and not good, God is still God. It is us humans who are lessened when we turn away from from God.
That’s the intimacy of God with us.
How about us, are we willing to be intimate with God in Jesus Christ?
Sadly, many people “create” and “force” intimacy which is a grace, a gift of God freely given to everyone. Like friendship, we cannot force intimacy into someone not meant to be. And like friendship too, intimacy begins in Christ, blooms in Christ.

Underneath the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth is a chapel near the very site where the angel is believed to have appeared to Mary to announce the coming of the Savior. At the back of the sanctuary of this chapel is that holy site of the Annunciation enclosed by iron grills with an altar table at the center with the declaration in Latin, Verbum Caro Hic Factum Est (The Word became flesh here).
Mary’s intimacy with God began long before the Annunciation to her by the Angel cultivated in her prayer life. Every time I pray this scene of the Annunciation, I always imagine Mary deeply absorbed in prayer. Most likely, she must be praying about her coming wedding to Joseph. Luke and Matthew were both consistent about their status as being “betrothed to each other” when God announced through the Angel the birth of the Christ.

Imagine the excitement and joy of two faithful Jews getting married soon when suddenly the Angel appeared to them on separate occasions and diverse situations to announce God’s plan of sending his own Son Jesus Christ for the salvation of the world?
It must have been most painful to both Mary and Joseph but as being truly faithful and loving of God, they both agreed to the Divine plan! And that is the great sign of their immense love for God – eventually for each other. Moreover, in saying yes to God, both Mary and Joseph showed the kind of intimacy they have with the Divine.
Let us focus on the intimacy of Mary with God on this Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception found in our gospel account of the Annunciation.

Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you ahve found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus (Luke 1:30-31).
Notice that in many scenes and prayers about the Blessed Virgin Mary, we find the prominence of her “womb” like here in the Annunciation and when Elizabeth praised her during her Visitation as “blessed is the fruit of your womb” (Lk.1:42).
In Hebrew, the word for womb is “racham, rachamin” which is their word too for “mercy” because for them, God’s mercy comes from his innermost being. Hence, whenever the Jews speak of mercy of God, they point their fingers downward into the womb or uterus and moves it upward to the heart to indicate the flow of mercy of God from his innermost being expressed in love which is he’s very being and core.
This is the reason the Church Fathers translated mercy into “misericordia” from the Latin verb to move or to stir – “misereor” – and word for heart “cor” that literally means “to move or to stir one’s heart”. It is more than a feeling like compassion; mercy is deeper as it encompasses one’s being leading to intimacy that is a communion or oneness with others which is also intimacy.

Where there is love, there is always intimacy with the lover willing to bear all pains and hurts for the beloved. And vice versa. Like Jesus. Then Mary who was willing to sacrifice her wedding and marriage to Joseph by being the Mother of the Son of God.
But why? Because we have experienced too that true joy comes only when there is giving of self, when there is willingness to let go and suffer. At the Last Supper, Jesus described joy as like a mother in the pangs of childbirth when she goes through a lot of pains and worries and fears almost like dying but once the baby is delivered, joy happens because she had brought forth a new life into the world.
True joy is having the firm belief that no matter what happens even in the worst scenarios, God would never leave nor forsake us. Joy happens when we find new life, new directions because there is another person willing to remain with us, assuring us we are never alone. That again is intimacy when you feel not alone especially in the most trying times.
Without intimacy with God and another person, there can be no true joy because no one would dare to take risks in this life like mothers. This is what modern women are missing when they see childbearing more as a chore or a burden or a suffering they can always avoid than self-giving borne out of love which happens in the context of an intimacy. No wonder too that sex has been so trivialized, reduced to an activity and act instead of as a gift of self because there is no more responsibility and intimacy. We cannot have lasting and meaningful relationships without intimacy.

On this Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, we are reminded of God’s mercy and intimacy with us, of his loving relationship with us that continues in Christ Jesus with Mary.
Let us nurture this beautiful relationship with God that flows and bears fruit in our relationships with one another.
Like Mary, may we finally say yes to God into an intimate relationship with him through our selflessness. Like Mary, we are blessed and full of grace. The joy awaiting far outweighs the pains and sufferings we shall go through in our gift of self in our relationships. Have no fear for Jesus had suffered first before us so that we can love and be intimate like him. Amen. Have a blessed week.

On that day they will sing this song in the land of Judah: "A strong city have we; he sets up walls and ramparts to protect us. Open up the gates to let in a nation that is just, one that keeps faith" (Isaiah 26:1-2).
Like most cities, O Lord our God, I lay in ruins: physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually; feeling lost, almost collapsing, trembling in so many fears and concerns; but my faith in you assures me of being "a strong city" with "walls and ramparts" that protect me; I may not see them now but "open the gates" of my heart to trust in you, in your continuing work in me so mysterious that leads to victory eventually.
Give me patience and perseverance; enliven my hope in you, Jesus Christ who comes to me daily, dwelling in me to be my "everlasting rock".
Jesus said to his disciples: “Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rains fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and buffeted the house. But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock” (Matthew 7:24-25).
Keep me faithful in you, Lord Jesus as I rejoice in your works, in your comfort, in your presence and coming. Amen.

Of course, there is no need for us to impress Jesus Christ for he loves us so immensely beyond measure. However, I have realized this week in my prayers that the Lord is most impressed with us when we are in our weakest.
It has been recurring in my prayers several times with the latest in this Wednesday’s gospel, “Raising his eyes toward his disciples Jesus said: ‘Blessed are you who are poor, for the Kingdom of God is yours’” (Luke 6:20).
I just love that scene of Jesus looking up to his disciples, looking up to us because normally we humans are the ones who look up to God his Father where he is seated to his right in heaven. When we pray, we sometimes raise our hands reaching up to God.
There is something so beautiful and wonderful when the Sacred Scriptures tell us of Jesus looking up to us. What an honor and a privilege! Because that happens when we are weakest, most flawed, and dirty with sin.
Imagine being there at that scene of the sermon on the plain and Jesus had to raise his eyes toward his disciples: he must have been at a lower position than them. This scene will have its fullness in the washing of the disciples’ feet after their Last Supper on Holy Thursday.
We who could no longer bow that low to clean and wash our feet as well as trim our toenails know this so well. Imagine all the dirt and flaws Jesus must have seen in the disciples’ feet that evening. Not a word was heard from Jesus. He teased no one nor complained of the dirt and unsightly things he must have seen too. Jesus simply bore everything because he loved them so much.

Jesus continues to look up to us every time we receive him in our hands during the Holy Communion. That is why I always tell the people especially our students to be very solemn during that occasion when the Son of God most powerful, all-knowing in his simplest form and sign as a thin wafer, enters us body and blood. It is the most perfect time to pray to Jesus, to tell him everything and most of all, to listen to him because that is when he is right inside our body, when he is down inside us, we above him.
Jesus does not need our triumphs and “goodness” because they all came from him actually. What he does not have is what we have a lot- the negative things like sins, hurts and bitterness, anger and resentment festering deep inside us for a long time. Those are the thing Jesus want from us, the very things he is most “impressed” with us that we are able to live with those burdens for so long. But, he is most impressed with us in the truest sense when we are able to surrender these to him because that’s when we are blessed and filled in him.
Raising his eyes toward his disciples Jesus said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for the Kingdom of God is yours. Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who are now weeping, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man” (Luke 6:20-22).

In this age of affluence brought about by technological advances, being poor and hungry, being maligned and weeping are things to be avoided at all costs. With people so fascinated with money and wealth, fame and power, being poor and hungry for God, weeping and being maligned for what is true and good and just are not impressive at all, even foolish.
But, look at the effect of those shameless social media posts by “nepo babies” of their crass lifestyle sustained by ill-gotten wealth at the expense of the poor – they have all been bashed relentlessly in the country leading to more evidence of corruption among government officials and law-makers while in Indonesia and Nepal, these same practices have sparked social unrest and upheavals recently!
For so long, many have wished to be rich and wealthy, to have all the money to buy good food and drinks, build mansions filled with expensive cars and adorn themselves with signature clothes and jewelries in the belief they can impress others. Maybe with their fellows with the same benighted souls but more often, they only bred jealousies and envies that led to vicious circles of corruption and crimes in the name of having more money.
In truth, no one is impressed with material things because people who feel good only with possessions are actually the most pitiable ones for they could not see their own value as a person. To be able to see one’s value as a person despite one’s sins and weaknesses is the beginning of being truly human.
Recall the Lord’s parable of the Pharisee and the publican praying at the temple: the publican who stayed at the back beating his chest so contrite for his sins went home blessed according to Jesus than the Pharisee who boasted of his own righteousness. “Magpakatotoo ka!” screamed a soda commercial not too long ago but still echoes so true these days.
Jesus is not impressed with what we have done nor achieved but with what we have become – that amid all the beatings and pains of life with all of our shortcomings and sins, we forge on with life, persevering in faith, filled with hope that Christ is our salvation. What impresses Jesus Christ most in us is what we lack because that is when he can be closest to us, one in us. See yourself the way Jesus sees you – as a person, loved and cared for. Regardless of what. Let me end this with a prayer wrapped in a song which I have always loved because it sounds like Jesus speaking to me, so impressed with me despite of everything.

Hail, O blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God our Mother too! Praised be God our Father for your infinite love for us in preparing the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary to be the Mother of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ. In Mary, we find hope and inspiration in your plans, O God for us in this world marred by sin and evil.
Brothers and sisters: We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, so that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those he predestined he also called; and those he called he also justified; and those he justified he also glorified (Romans 8:28-30).
In her birth, we are reminded of our new beginnings in you, Lord Jesus: let us cooperate with you always, Jesus so that "all things may work for good for those who love God"; let us be the new beginning of faith and trust in you, Jesus like Mary who entrusted her total self to your providence in explaining everything to Joseph about your coming as our Savior; most of all, like Mary our Mother, let us be the new beginning of your loving presence among us, Jesus, our Emmanuel, the God among us. Amen.

It is widely held that our physical well-being has a direct relationship with our spiritual condition and vice versa. That is why aside from the treatment of physical sickness, there is also a need to address the spiritual well-being of patients for their “healing” which is more wholistic in nature and meaning.
Jesus Christ himself showed this relationship of the physical and the spiritual. The gospels are filled with accounts of Jesus not only treating the sick but also of healing them by first touching them (physical) then telling them how their sins were forgiven or how great was their faith (spiritual).

Here we find that healing involves the total person in body, mind, heart and soul. Healing is not just the restoration of health but transformation of the person. This is the spirit behind hospital ministry. Patients eventually die but may have still experienced healing when properly prepared for death by a priest or pastor or a nun through counseling and administering of the Sacraments of Confession, Viaticum, and Anointing of the Sick.
As I immersed myself in this ministry since 2021 as chaplain of a university with a medical center, I have realized too that it is actually more of what Jesus is doing to me than of what I am doing to our patients and our medical professionals. Indeed, priesthood is a ministry seeking new directions in Jesus Christ that is most true in the hospital ministry when the tables – or beds – are turned on me as patient needing medical and spiritual attention!
Twice I have been rushed to the ER for minor accidents: first in 2023 and second only this Sunday when I slipped in our garage and hurt my left knee. While recovering in my room from this recent injury, I decided to put into writing to share with you some lessons from my two experiences that may hopefully help in the healing process of those who are wounded physically and emotionally.

First thing to do when we are wounded physically and spiritually or emotionally is to have the wounds “cleansed”.
We were having a tug-o-war during our 2023 team-building when the rope snapped and sent me rolling down the ground. I quickly stood up and brushed the dirt and blood on my left arm, declining offers of others to wash and clean my wounds as I insisted to them sanay po ako sa ganito.
But when our university physician approached me on my way to the wash area to check my wounds and asked if I had had anti-tetanus shots before because I would be needing one that afternoon, everything changed. Fear crept in me with all the scary imaginations running through my mind as I asked him why the tetanus shots? The doctor explained that the ground is dirty with harmful bacteria including animal shit that may infect my wounds; hence, the need to first wash my wounds with clean water and soap and get anti-tetanus shots for sure. Oh my God…
Looking back to that experience after this recent fall (when I got another pair of tetanus shots), I realized the same thing is true when our heart and soul are wounded: we need to wash them clean with sincerity and honesty of one’s self. Cleansing our spiritual and emotional wounds require self-confrontation, no ifs nor buts why it happened. It is recalling the incident no matter how painful it may be like in washing our physical wounds with water and soap to clean ourselves of harmful microbes of anger and hatred that might infect us later.
Cleansing our emotional and spiritual wounds is being true to ourselves to face, accept, then embrace the realities why and how it happened. Crying may be good as a catharsis which is literally a cleansing process. Cleansing our spiritual and emotional wounds is suspending any conclusions that may lead to unnecessary self-pity and self-blame of the incident by facing the mirror like when after we have washed our wounds on any part of the body to check and see its extent of damage. It is normal to be sad and even angry because it is painful as it is something hurting from deep inside us. The more we face our wounds, the more we become at home with them.

Next is disinfect the wounds and apply medications to prevent infection. After washing my wounds with soap and water that Sunday, I disinfected these with Cutasept that resulted in more pain as if the antiseptic solution was fiercely battling the germs and microbes trying to infect my left knee.
When our soul is wounded, we do the same procedure after cleansing by facing the realities of pains and hurts with prayer, our spiritual antiseptic. Even doctors prescribe prayers to their patients in critical situation. And here is the interesting part in this process: prayer does not change the situation, it will not remove the wounds even the scars in our memory and soul; but, prayers make us stronger and better after the spiritual and emotional woundings we have had. Most of all, prayer facilitates our healing process because it opens us to Jesus, the only doctor who will heal us completely from both physical and spiritual and emotional wounds.

Part of disinfecting and applying medications to our spiritual and emotional wounds is seeking help from others, finding Jesus our healer from priests and nuns, pastors and counsellors, and persons you look up to for their wisdom and maturity in Christ. Like when we are physically wounded that we go consult doctors, the same thing is needed when we are emotionally and spiritually wounded. Prayers like disinfectants and medicines are not everything; persons give the personal touch of the spiritual disinfection and healing of our brokenness inside. There is no need to let everyone know our spiritual and emotional wounds; simply share your hurts with someone who could help you “treat” your wounds and willing to journey with you in its long process of healing.
Do not broadcast these in social media which would only worsen the situation. That’s rubbing salt on your wounds because not everyone out there cares for you! It will just feed the frenzy of the many “low life” hungry for anything negative to feast upon. Every time I come across selfies of people while at the ER or confined in the hospital, I wonder how sick they really are that they could still hold their cellphone while being treated for an injury. Getting sick physically and emotionally is always an occasion for more prayers and conversion in Christ.
Finally, dress your wounds for protection. I am from Generation X and most of us were never hospitalized nor brought to the ER for any treatment while still a child despite our many mischiefs and misadventures while growing up.
We only had our mother as doctor who treated our wounds with agua oxinada and gamot na pula that was so painful that we need to blow dry our wounds once dabbed with it. Then, mom would leave our wounds open like that, no kuritas and gauze because makukulob ang sugat, magtutubig at magnanana (infection).That is why after that 2023 injury, I did not follow the doctor’s instruction to cover my wounds on my left arm with gauze; I would later learn its value in a painful and embarrassing way a week after when I was called to anoint a patient in our ICU.
On my way there, the elevator door suddenly closed that instinctively I used my left wounded arm to stop it. Anyway, I thought the wounds were already healing and felt no pain at all when hit by the elevator door. When I entered the ICU, the nurses and doctors stared at me and asked what had happened because blood was dripping from my left arm. It was only then I realized the elevator door had scratched my wounds!
What a shame that doctors and nurses attended first to my wounds before letting me anoint the patient; I felt so embarrassed especially when the attending physician explained the need to cover wounds for protection from dirt and other elements as well as accidents like what had happened to me at the elevator.

From that experience, I realized that one reason our spiritual and emotional wounds never get healed is because we “expose” them. When a person is wounded in heart or soul, it is not enough we clean and disinfect and treat them. We need to protect them from further pains and hurts from those who have inflicted their emotional wounds. Protecting them is to stop blaming them in causing their inner pains and hurts. Nasaktan na nga, nasisi pa. Ibinaon pa!
Friends and loved ones are the spiritual gauze who cover and protect spiritual wounds from more hurts and pains. They are the Band-aid strips protecting those spiritually and emotionally wounded by being at their side, assuring them with love and support, of still believing them despite their painful experiences. There is no need to engage the guilty offenders into a skirmish. If their wounds were of their own doing, soften the impact by motivating them to be better, to hope for the best, that it is not the end of their lives. And most of all, assure them their life is not defined by their emotional and spiritual wounds.
Protecting those wounded emotionally and spiritually means helping them find anew their true selves and worth as persons who are beloved children of God. Protecting them like gauze is helping them bear the long process of healing.

There is a saying that “time heals” but time can only heal when there is human intervention in the treatment of our emotional wounds aided by prayers and faith in God. Time alone, no matter how long the years are, cannot heal us in itself if we remain exposed to dirt and elements that contribute to “infecting” us further. Or worst, if we remain with the very causes of our wounds.
For those hurting spiritually or emotionally, may Jesus Christ heal you and give you the courage to confront and deal with your inner wounds and pains. Seek God and seek persons too to help you. Easter is a reality, an event and experience always new and fresh. And relevant. I refuse to describe it as “ever new” because it is not changing nor evolving; it is “new” as it is “unfolding” like God or a loved one’s person revealed daily.
In his coming to us, Jesus brought God most real and closest to us humans more than ever, enabling us to experience in him a newness in life, so refreshing and relevant always. That is why we heard the word “new” five times in our readings today, four in the Book of Revelation and once in the Gospel.

Then I, John, saw a new heaven and new earth. I also saw the holy city, a new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. The one who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new” (Revelation 21:1, 2, 5).
When Judas had left them, Jesus said, “I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:31, 34-35).

New heaven, new earth, new Jerusalem, new commandment. With Jesus making all things new.
“New” as a word connotes something fresh and recent, presupposing two conditions: either as something non-existent before that is introduced and made only now or, something already existing before but found and discovered only recently.
As such, anything “new” is actually a supernatural reality, a gift from God waiting to be discovered by anyone with faith, hope and love. It is in God through Jesus Christ’s Resurrection that we actually experience the true meaning of what is “new”.
First, as something not existing before like John’s vision of “new heaven, new earth, new Jerusalem” in the Book of Revelation. John had been clear at the onset of his writing of his final book which is to report to us the things that will happen in the future. And we all hope that indeed, someday there will be a new heaven, a new earth, and a new Jerusalem in the future. How it would look like, we really don’t know but deep in our hearts we hope for that especially in this time of too much crying, pain and death everywhere.
Of course, it sounds too good to be true but for us disciples of Christ, it is something we have to work for and not just pray for. What a joy to hear the new Pope, Leo XIV mentioning in his first public address asking for the release of all hostages in Gaza as well as for peace in Ukraine. We really hope our new Pope will continue with his more direct and firm assertions of Jesus and his teachings than be like the previous Pope who tried accommodating non-Christian religions and beliefs because peace comes only in Christ.
Though John’s vision of new heaven, new earth, and new Jerusalem refers to the end of time where “there shall be no more death or mourning, wailing or pain” (Rev. 21:4), it is something we can experience now if we let Jesus reign in us so he may wipe away the tears in our eyes caused by our continued hardness of the hearts.
A new heaven, a new earth, a new Jerusalem can only happen when we allow Jesus Christ to reign in our hearts more than ever so that the former heaven, former earth and sea pass away. That is why the Prophet Isaiah called the Christ as the Emmanuel, God-is-with-us, precisely the vision saw by John in Revelation, “Behold, God’s dwelling is with the human race. He will dwell with them and they will be his people and God himself will always be with them as their God” (Rev. 21:3).
As we have seen two Sundays ago, no locked doors can prevent Jesus from breaking through to get to us, for us to experience his loving presence. Most of all like last Sunday, we must learn to entrust ourselves confidently to Jesus our Good Shepherd because only he knows us his sheep so well. That confidence in him in making all things new happens when we love like him.

"I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another" (John 13:34-35).
What is new in Jesus Christ’s commandment of loving? Answer: it is a love rooted in God the Father to whom Jesus is totally one with, totally entrusting himself even up to dying on the Cross.
It is a love that has long existed before since the very beginning but only discovered and found recently in Jesus Christ, the Son of God who became human like us in everything except sin. It is new because it ever refreshes anyone who loves like Christ. Most of all, it is new because it is most relevant at all times.
Any love not rooted in God will surely pass and fail. Though other religions and movements preach love, only Jesus tells us to love like him who is rooted in the Father who is love himself. See that Christ’s command to love like him is not only new but also radical at the same time as it brings us to the very root of love, God: “God is love… In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us (first)” (1 Jn.4: 8,10). According to Pope Benedict XVI, “God is love” is the most unique declaration on God not found in other religions except Christianity.
It is a love already existing before and discovered only by the Apostles in their experience of Jesus Christ. That is why in the first reading Paul and Barnabas told the disciples in Antioch to persevere in faith, saying, “It is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter the kingdom of God” (Acts 14:22). How sad it is a truth we have all known and proven all along but we continue to disregard even avoid, taking shortcuts in everything that often end in failures.
It is said that the more constricted the pupa (chrysalis) of a larva or caterpillar, the better are its chances of transforming into a more colorful butterfly.
The same is true with us humans. Life that is so easy and laid back when everything is provided for without any sweat at all always leads to emptiness and nothingness. Very often, the most fulfilled people – not necessarily successful which is very relative – are those who have gone through a lot of sufferings and hardships in life. They are mostly the men and women of passion for learning, willing to sacrifice a lot even their very selves for the sake of a truth and a love they are so convinced. Actually, what they have found and discovered have always been there hidden for ages even millions of years but due to their intense love, they found something so new that eventually revolutionized our lives and the world for better or for worse.
This Sunday, Jesus offers us to make our lives new and better, definitely more beautiful but not necessarily pain free. Are we willing to love like him to discover something new today or this week?
"Lord Jesus Christ, let us love like you so we may be transformed to someone new and eventually change the world to something new and better in you. Amen."

Our gospel on this last Sunday in Lent is so similar in its beauty and simplicity -and drama – with last week’s parable of the prodigal son. In fact, some believe the style of the woman caught in adultery is very much like Luke but, let’s leave that to the experts.
On this beautiful Sunday, it is John’s turn to invite us to enter into the scene of his story set at the temple area shortly before the arrest of Jesus Christ.
Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. But early in the morning he arrived again in the temple area, and all the people started coming to him, and he sat down and taught them. Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery and made her stand in the middle (John 8:1-3).

Try entering the scene. See the woman who most likely almost naked draped only in a piece of cloth as proof of her committing adultery. The Pharisees and the scribes were ganging up on her to Jesus whom they wanted to test, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?”
Imagine being there, standing close to Jesus and the woman. How would you feel? Would you be able to look at the woman straight on her face? Nah… seems not good. Perhaps, glance only as you feel also her pain and shame. But, can you look straight at the angry mob? Probably for a while with much fears and trepidation along with a deep anger within you cannot express.
Most likely, it is only at Jesus you can look intently and longer because he is not looking at you. Tensions were rising and Jesus simply bent down, writing something on the ground with his finger while the Pharisees and scribes raised up their attacks against him and the lowly woman standing listlessly, so embarrassed, so ashamed. Even in tears.
Recall those moments when we too were caught in the midst of an undeniable transgression like her or, simply being a witness, someone caught in between of another person without any way out of his/her predicament. It must be so dark. So scary. And shameful.
Then, the unexpected happened: But when they continued asking him, he (Jesus) straightened up and said to them, “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he bent down and wrote on the ground. and in response, they went away one by one, beginning with the elders. So he was left alone with the woman before him (John 8:7-9).

Many times, we encounter Jesus in our most vulnerable situation when we let go of our guards so to speak.
It is one of the great ironies in life: when we are most vulnerable and weakest, that is when we are also most truest to our self. And that is when we truly grow and mature in life.
That is when we feel peace and joy and freedom within when we are left alone with Jesus still looking down, writing with his finger on the ground to give us more space literally and figuratively speaking. It is not that Jesus wants to shame us or whatever but simply wants us to be true as he has always been true to us, full of love and mercy. Most of all, with all of Christ’s humility in bending, that is when we finally admit the need for a Savior, the need to be converted in him.
We encounter Jesus when we disarm ourselves of our false securities and pretenses, masks and camouflages that all cover our sins. It is when we come face-to-face with our sinful self when we eventually meet Jesus face-to-face too because that is when we surrender in silence like the woman caught in adultery and the mob to some degree because all the charges against us are true.
See also that it is only the fourth gospel that Jesus is portrayed “bending” low – first here before the woman caught committing adultery and secondly at the washing of the feet of his Apostles at their Last Supper. How lovely is that sight to behold, dear friends! Imagine God bending before us, giving us like the sinful woman and the mob that space for us to confront our true self, to realize and accept the whole realities we are all interconnected in love.
Only the woman remained – like the eleven Apostles at the Last Supper – because she was the only one willing to change, probably sorrowful and contrite for her sins. Contrary to our fears, Jesus has only love and mercy, kindness and forgiveness to anyone contrite and sorrowful of one’s sin that so unlike with the people’s wrath and anger, judgment and condemnation. St. Augustine perfectly described that moment in today’s gospel, Relicti sunt duo; misera et miserecordia (Two were left; misery and mercy).
Then Jesus straightened up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She replied, “No one, sir.” Then Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin anymore” (John 8:10-11).

We are now on the final Sunday of Lent. Next week will be the Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion that ushers in the Holy Week leading to the Sacred Triduum of Holy Thursday Evening, Good Friday and Easter Vigil and on to the Mother of all Feasts, Easter.
As we get closer to the holiest week of the year, our liturgy invites us to intensify our Lenten practices to be “conformed to Christ’s death” as St. Paul urged us in the second reading which opened with these beautiful confession:
“Brothers and sisters: I consider everything as a loss because of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus as my Lord. For his sake I have accepted the loss of all things and I consider them so much rubbish, that I may gain Christ” (Philippians 3:8).
The pillars of Lent – prayer, fasting and alms-giving – aim to empty us of our very selves, of our pride and sins that all prevent us from encountering Jesus Christ always coming to us full of love and mercy. On this final stretch of Lent, are we ready to let go of ourselves and to let God?
Today, Jesus assures us of his love and forgiveness for our sins. The first reading tells us of God asking us to forget the events of the past. Just come home to him. And never leave him like the woman caught committing adultery. Amen.Have blessed week ahead.

Thus says the Lord: Lo, I am about to create new heavens and a new earth; the things of the past shall not be remembered or come to mind. Instead, there shall always be rejoicing and happiness in what I create; For I create Jerusalem to be a joy and its people to be a delight (Isaiah 65:17-18).
Oh what a great joy to listen to you, God our loving Father this Monday promising us of you creating new heavens and new earth!
There is that great excitement always in everything that is new - a new home a new job a new relationship a new destination a new phone or car; but Father, that is how we look at everything new - always outside of us; this Lent, turn us to look inside our hearts, into our very selves as the new beginning; let us be excited and joyful for a new self a new heart a new attitude! like that official from Capernaum who begged Jesus to heal his son, let us realize new heavens and new earth begin with a new me. Amen.
