Praise and glory to you,
God our Father for the gift of
St. John Marie Vianney,
our Patron Saint,
your priests!
Oh what a glorious day
is this day falling on a
First Friday,
a day special to the
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus,
our Eternal Priest.

Thank you,
thank you,
thank you, Lord.
From the very start
as we have heard from
the Book of Leviticus
in the first reading,
you have set special
days of celebrations
to remember you and
your saving works;
at its service are
your priests.
Always.

But, no...
We are not the center
of your festivals, Lord,
but your mere servants;
how sad that since then
in the wilderness
down to your Temple
up to our own time
in these beautiful churches
we celebrate the Holy Mass,
we your priests have
consciously or unconsciously
turned attention and focus
onto ourselves.

Mea culpa, mea culpa,
mea maxima culpa!
Forgive us your priests
for playing God,
O merciful Father.
Help us to keep coming back
to Nazareth like your Son Jesus;
let us get lost in the hiddenness
and silence of Nazareth;
let us be at home with you
in the obscurity and nothingness
of Nazareth;
let us welcome too the
rejections of Nazareth
like Jesus our Eternal Priest.
In all these 25 years as a priest,
my prayer to you dear God
remains the same:
Lord, you have given me
with so much
and I have given you so little;
teach me to give more
of myself,
more of YOU.
In Jesus' name.
Amen.
St. John Marie Vianney,
pray for us priests!

Make it easy on yourself

I am not going to sing,
Lord, but Burt Bacharach's
old tune "Make It Easy on Yourself"
is one consoling song
that must have come
only from you.
Many times,
our worst enemy is
our very self;
many times we are
so hard on ourselves,
unforgiving,
unkind and
uncharitable
not only to ourselves
but also to those
dearest to us.
Like Tobit who
refused to believe
the goat brought home
by his wife Anna was a gift,
not stolen as he insisted.

Yet I would not believe her, and told her to give it back to its owners. I became very angry with her over this. So she retorted: “Where are your charitable deeds now? Where are your virtuous acts? See! Your true character is finally showing itself!”

Tobit 2:14
Forgive us, loving Father
for the many times
we ourselves indict us
for wrongdoings we
accuse others of doing
like those Pharisees
and Herodians
who tried to ensnare
Jesus with the question
about paying taxes
when they themselves
handed him a denarius
they were not supposed
to bring in the temple area,
a clear sign of violating
their own laws,
of bringing false images
in the house of God!
Teach us, O God,
to be easy on ourselves,
to be kinder,
to be softer
with our weaknesses
and shortcomings
for we are not gods
like you; most of all,
teach us to be easy
on ourselves
so we may be also easy
on others
and to you too!
Amen.

The joy of Easter: Christ comes in our rejections

Acts 4:1-12   ><]]]]'> + <'[[[[><   John 21:1-14

How wonderful to ponder,
to think over and over,
Lord Jesus,
how you yourself experienced
rejection - big time -
that now you come to us
in our own rejections too!

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, answered them, “Leaders of the people and elders: If we are being examined today about a good deed done to a cripple, namely, by what means he was saved, then all of you and all the people of Israel should know that it was in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazorean whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead; in his name this man stands before you healed. He is the stone rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone.”

Acts 4:8-11
Many times, Lord,
we keep on going back
to our previous way of life
like Peter and company on
that third time you appeared
to them at the Lake of Tiberias;
actually, O Lord,
the most crushing rejections
we have gone through are nothing
compared to yours because very often,
most rejections we experience
actually come from our very selves:
our self-rejections
of our worth,
of our abilities,
most of all,
of us being loved
and forgiven by you!

Help us to find you in
every rejection that comes
our way when you appear
like after a night of fruitless
catch of fish when you told
the disciples to cast their net
to the right side (Jn. 21:6);
open our eyes to recognize you,
Jesus, like your beloved disciple
in every bountiful catch
after every rejection as you
firmly establish us
for your task
and mission.
Amen.
